April Smith - Back in the region
Apr. 13th, 2011 07:04 amThis has been a great week of concerts and shows already following Monday's Beats Antique show in Birmingham. It was without a doubt one of the best performances I've seen and heard. I'll write more on the show later today.
Starting with a show on Thursday, April Smith and The Great Picture Show will be in the region. If you can afford the time and the admission - GO! This is a not to be missed performance.
April 14 - Atlanta, GA - The Loft @ Center Stage (Openning for Fritz and the Tantrums)
April 15 - Hoover, AL - Barnes and Noble (Free in-store)
April 16 - Nashville, TN - Grimey's (Free Record Store Day in-store)

As mentioned in a previous “post”, back in April, I was fortunate enough to get to see Voltaire and his traveling band perform live at the Mercy Lounge in Nashville. Without a doubt it was a great show.

e_phemera packed into the car after work Friday evening to drive down to Birmingham, AL. The goal was Imagicon 2009 and more particularly the Friday Sleep When You’re Dead” show. Despite a comedic episode at an Arby’s (fast-food shop) on the relatively peaceful drive down, we managed to find the hotel and Con site without much fuss. Why ‘comedic’ you might ask? The person taking our order couldn’t get anything right and eventually simply stopped talking to us over the remote microphone. We drove up to the window and made the manager take the order all over.

As I'mentioned, I've been a bit busy, but I've managed to get out here and there for breaks in unpacking and recovering. One ot those was last week, when at the recommendation of a nice 40 year old transplant from California, I went to hear Daikaiju (http://www.myspace.com/daikaiju) at the Flying Monkey. After a lengthy delay for the openning band to get there and get set, these guys came out and let loose. I'm putting the slide show up front and a select group of photos from the show.

I meant to get these photos posted yesterday, but various other priorities and issues kept me occupied all day and most of the evening.
That being said, this was a very fun show to experience. The music was well written and performed with energy and enthusiasm. Gagging Lolly is a duo which produces a techno, trip-hop, pop styled sound. DJ Rotten plays the keyboards and synth’s, while Charlie fronts the band. I don’t know if this is a trend in local music, but like the performers in Mystery Hangup, Fallopian and my good friend Juliette from Red Light District, Charlie packs a huge voice into a very petite frame with a tremendous presence on stage. Oh BTW, the name “Gagging Lolly” is a play on the fact that they aren’t lolly gagging in their desire to perform and make music!

The second band up after Fallopian was new to us. Mystery Hangup is another all female band. Without a doubt, they are impressive to listen to and watch. The performance was full of energy and their style sharp.

Late last month, the kids and I had the opportunity to venture to The CIA in North Hollywood for a triple bill. Openning the evening was all female, bank Fallopian. Although they were missing their bassist, they still put on a great performance.
Act 3, Scene 4 – The Radioactive Chicken Heads
Several weeks ago (before my computer crashed and delayed these), I was invited to The Radioactive Chicken Heads music video release party in Hollywood. Immediately after Haunted Cologne’s rowdy set, the organizers of the event dimmed the lights and showed a short movie to get the audience ready of more on the screen. Done in a 1920’s silent movie style, it also gave people time to let their ears adjust catch their breath and let the band dress. Following the short was the grand premier of the first video release by the Radioactive Chicken Heads, ”I Looked Into The Mirror”. The video is also available at:

Act 2, Scene 3 – Haunted Cologne
Several weeks ago (before my computer crashed and delayed these), I was invited to The Radioactive Chicken Heads
(RCH’s) music video release party in Hollywood. This was so much fun, all I can say is – wow. I got there well before the shows and staked out a good spot to one side of the stage. I also helped the organizers do a bit of stage dressing (including the large background seen in the pictures). Overall, I was hugely impressed.
After Fallopian completed their set, the next band was absolutely unique. Haunted Cologne was a Rock-a-Billy Polka band. Yes, you read that right. You can indeed rock out playing a tuba, drums and accordion. After standing stunned for a sec at the start of this set, the sound became infectious. Then it got even better. After a few songs, the surprise guest mentioned in the announcements hit the stage – Count Smokula joined them on stage – and the crowd went wild. Did you know, you can mosh to polka?
