As we continued eastward into the Barstow area, it became increasingly apparent something odd was going on. No more than 300 yards / meters down the highway we started seeing survey stakes and markers. Within a mile of the first house, we saw two forlorn homes boarded up next to each other. Welcome to the Pigeon Homes.

Most of the doors and windows on both houses were boarded up in identical manner

Power meters were still hooked up on both buildings

Check out the floor in this kitchen

Culprit – These houses in several places had as much as 6 inches of feathers and droppings covering the floors. In some cases, you could have recreated an entire bird or two or three (dozen) with the fluff.

False color, enhanced lighting of an improvised memorial found in one room

Living (Dying) Room of the second house

Cabinet and nesting space a plenty

Room and Board

Life amidst the decay (hint: Tomorrow’s NPofD)
As we stood in the yard of the second house and looked further east more than half the houses we saw were boarded up and strangely abandoned. Clean yards and relatively newer houses, sealed up to await their fates. Although thte houses weren’t marked, the boarding of the windows was consistent with CalTrans procedures.
